The Club was formed in 1974 by a small group of individuals keen to promote interest in the hobby and share resources.  Meetings were originally held in member’s homes until a room was rented at the Waitakere Township Ratepayers Association Hall. In 1982 the Club moved to its present site, in the basement of the old winery building at Te Rangi Hiroa Park, Massey. With the blessing of the Council, this facility provided an excellent location for a permanent model railway layout. The basement was renovated to include a storeroom, workshop, kitchen and social room. At present there is both a large HO/OO and an N gauge running layout. The layouts are owned by the Club, with members having running rights thereon for their rolling stock.

The Club’s main constitutional requirement is to further the hobby interest. This has evolved into the permanent layouts and a number of exhibition layouts that members have designed and built over the years. These have been developed by the WDMRC and two other associated groups:-

–  the Waitakere N-Trak Group, and
–  the Waitakere Modular Railway Group (the WMRG.)

The WMRG. now incorporates the N-Trak group members and all are members of the WDMRC. This provides the Club with an “exhibition” arm, who attend to the design, build and display of model railway layouts at exhibitions and public displays.

Our biggest public display is at our annual Model X Hobby Extravaganza held over Queen’s Birthday Weekend. This successful show has been run since 1986 at the West Wave Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Henderson. Many other local hobby clubs and individuals join us at Model X to look out for new members and raise much-needed funds. Trade stands also support this show, which has proven to be a great success. Its energy is a direct result of the many Exhibitors and Club Members who volunteer their skills and time.

Members meet every Monday night at the Clubrooms at 7:30pm. The 1st and 2nd Mondays of each month are running nights whilst the remaining Monday nights are put aside for working on the layouts or other maintenance projects. A Track Foreman is appointed for each of the layouts and organises the work parties as required.  We also have a small energetic group of Junior Members who are building a small TT gauge layout in order to gain some experience.

Club Committee meetings are held monthly and all members are welcome to attend.

Apart from these set times:-

  • Additional running times may be organised by members who have particular railway interests: e.g, NZR, N. American, British….etc.
  • from time to time Clinics on various related topics are held at the Clubrooms.
  • the club supports the many NZ railway enthusiast group activities in and around greater Auckland. These cater for NZR and steam railway interests and  enable members and their family and friends to have a day out.
  • Open Days are held (every other month) at the Club to display the layouts and to look out for new members. These     are occasions for us to keep in touch with the Community. The dates are advertised in the local newspaper.
  • Labour Weekend (the Playing Trains weekend). Each year the WDMRC members put aside this weekend to catch up with model railway projects and maintenance on their exhibition layouts. Other clubs join in and share the costs of the venue (usually a school hall in the West). Sunday, the doors are open to the public to allow them to see how we do things and ask questions. The venue, time and date are advertised in the local newspaper.
  • members organize, staff and manage the annual Model X Hobby Extravaganza in Henderson (see above)

If you are particularly interested in Model Railways, may we invite you to attend our Monday meetings for a few weeks or come and visit us on an Open Day or one of our exhibitions. We look forward to sharing our railway interests.
